Ajloun Castle (Ajloun Fortress – Qalaʿat ar-Rabad) is located in northern Jordan near the town of the same name, Ajloun. The fortress was built in the 12th century and protected nearby iron mines which were essential for the manufacture of weapons. In addition, it was part of a chain of strongholds for the transmission of important messages. These were passed on by fire and pigeon mail. Today the beautiful castle ruins can be visited.
