Best time to travel
What time of year on the Antarctic Peninsula is ideal for wildlife viewing?
In early summer (October, November) the seals give birth and larger groups can often be seen on ice floes. Mating season and nest building is the order of the day for long-tailed penguins. In midsummer (December, January) there are penguin chicks to admire. However, the cute seal children spend most of their time under the ice with their mother. In midsummer and late summer, individual seals usually rest on ice floes. Penguins offer fun photo opportunities in late summer (February, March) when they are in the midst of moulting. Leopard seals can be seen hunting more frequently during this time as they prey on inexperienced juvenile penguins. In addition, you have the best chances of whales in Antarctica in late summer.
As always in nature, the usual times can change, for example due to changed weather conditions.
