Subantarctic Island
South Shetland Islands
Halfmoon Island
Halfmoon Island is the crescent-shaped crater rim of an extinct volcano. The island measures around 3,5 km2 and belongs to the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands. Argentina has had an Antarctic research station on Half-Moon Island since 1955, otherwise the island is uninhabited.
Tourists can land on a cruise to Antarctica. A beautiful stopover and only about 120km from the Antarctic Peninsula removed. Halfmoon Island is known for its chinstrap penguin colony, but gentoo penguins and Antarctic fur seals are also often sighted. With a bit of luck you can also spot Weddell seals or elephant seals.
Our first shore leave on our Antarctic voyage took us to the coast of Halfmoon Island. The island is politically part of Antarctica and falls under the Antarctic Treaty, which does not allow for state sovereignty. The AGE™ experience report about the rugged beauty of South Shetland takes you on a journey: Find out more about this exciting shore excursion and look forward to funny photos of chinstrap penguins moulting.
Tourists can also discover Antarctica on an expedition ship, for example on the Sea Spirit.
