Great temple

The so-called Great Temple ancient city of Petra in Jordan extends over three levels and covers more than 7000 square meters. This made the Great Temple the largest building in the center of Petra. Its origins date back to the end of the 1st century BC. Dated. However, in the 1st century AD the building was expanded and decorated.

Originally it was thought to have a religious purpose, which is how the Great Temple got its name. However, it was probably not a temple at all, but rather a kind of royal reception hall. Colored wall paintings and restored stucco elements are still occasionally visible today.
