Temple of the Winged Lions in Petra Jordan

The remains of the Temple of the Winged Lions are in the center of the Rock city of Petra, across from the so-called Great temple. In AD 363, like many buildings in the city, it was destroyed in a strong earthquake. It was named after depictions of winged lions that adorned the corner pillars and were found during excavations. An eye stele with the inscription “Goddess of Hayyan, son of Naybat” was also found in the temple remains. It is considered evidence that the temple was dedicated to al-Uzza. This Nabataean deity was brought into harmony with the Roman goddess Aphrodite. This path leads to the Temple of the Winged Lions as well as the churches of Petra.
