Arctic – Svalbard Archipelago
Main island of Svalbard
Alkefjellet bird rock
The Alkefjellet bird rock is one of the places with a guaranteed wow factor in Svalbard. The approximately 100 meter high cliff is home to a huge breeding colony of thick-billed guillemots with around 60.000 pairs of birds that nest there and flit through the air.
Alkefjellet is located on the Hinlopen Strait in the northeast of the main island of Spitsbergen and is part of the Northeast Spitsbergen Nature Reserve. Around 100 to 150 million years ago, basalt penetrated the existing rocks there and created an impressive cliff. Tourists on a sea trip can enjoy the special atmosphere of the Bird Rock on a zodiac ride.
Based on the English name of the birds, the place is also called Mount Guillemot. In addition to the sheer number of birds and the mighty cliffs, the busy buzzing and background noise on the bird rock is particularly impressive. Arctic foxes sometimes also look for food on the flatter cliff areas.
For photographers, a visit to Alkefjellet in the evening is ideal, when the rocks are illuminated by the sun. During our visit, high fog obscured the sun, creating a unique, mystical lighting atmosphere that underlines the extraordinary character of the place.
