Rock city of Petra
Great temple
The so-called Great Temple ancient city of Petra in Jordan extends over three levels and covers more than 7000 square meters. This made the Great Temple the largest building in the center of Petra. Its origins date back to the end of the 1st century BC. Dated. However, in the 1st century AD the building was expanded and decorated.
Originally it was thought to have a religious purpose, which is how the Great Temple got its name. However, it was probably not a temple at all, but rather a kind of royal reception hall. Colored wall paintings and restored stucco elements are still occasionally visible today.
Many areas of the building are badly damaged and only give an idea of what they might have looked like in the past. However, the small Theatron is very noticeable. This theatre-like spectator area was subsequently added to the Great Temple of Petra under Roman influence and may have been part of a council chamber. On the west side was after Incorporation into the Roman Empire a bath complex is also attached.
If you have some time, you can explore all three levels of the Great Temple. Narrow corridors, wide squares, well-preserved staircases, columns with magnificent capitals, antique water pipe systems, remnants of earlier decorations, old floor coverings and much more can be discovered here.
