Arctic – Svalbard Archipelago
Main island of Svalbard
Julibukta
July Bay (Julibukta) is located on the west coast of the main island of Spitsbergen, at the beginning of Kreuzfjord, just north of ny-Ålesund. It is a natural beauty of Svalbard and offers glacier panoramas, bird cliffs and botanical delights.
Tourists on a trip to Svalbard can marvel at the impressive, approximately 30 meter high escarpment of the Arctic glacier, which is called Fjortende Julibreen. The bird rocks can also be visited and even a shore excursion is possible. Julibukta is particularly popular for spotting the cute puffins (Fratercula arctica) in Svalbard.
The 130 square meter Fourteenth of July Glacier (Fjortende Julibreen) owes its name to Prince Albert I of Monaco, who named it during one of his expeditions in Svalbard. It is probably dedicated to the French national holiday. The thick-billed guillemots (Uria lomvia), also known as Brünnich's guillemot, as well as the popular puffins breed in the nearby bird rocks. During a shore excursion you can marvel at the unusually rich arctic vegetation in this area. There is also a chance of seeing reindeer or arctic foxes.
Julibukta is a popular stopover destination Svalbard cruise, because scenic, animal and botanical sights are close together there. The AGE™ experience report “Spitsbergen Cruise: Midnight Sun & Calving Glaciers” takes you on a journey.
