An absolute Ecuador highlight is the Galapagos National Park. The archipelago lies around 1.000km from the mainland in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. This particular isolation has on the Galapagos Islands created a unique ecosystem, which has already inspired the evolutionary researcher Charles Darwin. Endemic animal species, such as the Galapagos giant tortoise, live only on the Galapagos Islands. The national park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
